over again. erin, you were heavily involved in covering the john edwards trial. what did we learn there? >> well, i think we learned, number one i mean the justice department has had a real mixed record this year and actually the last four years. in john edwards' case he won the battle. he was acquitted on one charge and there was a mistrial on the other, so he walked away but i think he lost the war. so i think we learned more unfortunately, about this particular individual than most of us really wanted to know. and the whole idea of him trying to come back right now, you know, he spent a fortune, maybe his fortune, on this case. he hasn't worked for four years. he's trying to get his law license back to active status. it will be interesting to see what he does next. >> moving forward. >> changed a lot of people's views about politicians, too, and their personal lives. >> it was an astonishing fall from grace. i think when all of a sudden people start peeling back the layers of your life inside a courtroom, it's not the place where you ever want to have that

edward becker, jr. saying that he had been drinking and smashing the windows of his father's truck with a hammer. when they arrived on the scene, they asked becker to drop that hammer. he didn't, and they say that he came within an arm's length of the officer. police say that's when the officer shot and fired and the officer says that he was in fear for his life, that's why he did it. this morning he is on administrative leave. it's routine as this investigation continues. >>> to baltimore county now where police tell us that one man is dead after he tried to break into a store in glen burnie. this happened early yesterday morning at arundel coin and collectibles. police say byron phillips broke into the store. a fight broke out between him and the employee and philip was shot. store employee who shot the man is cooperating with the investigation. his name has not been released. no charges have been filed as of right now. >>> new details on a christmas eve attack that left two firefighters dead and three other first responders injured. this is in a quiet upstate new york town. aar

to have you here and starting with the short term now that we know that edward kennedy jr. is not going to run for this spot. there were reports that ted kennedy's wife and widow victoria might have interest in this, as well as speculation about the outgoing congressman barney frank saying that he would have -- be interested in this. politico in a new article today quotes frank as saying he is tired. but is the governor there tipped his hand to victoria kennedy or barney frank as an option? >> he hasn't. he has to make up his mind. he said he expects to appoint an interim who will not run for the seat. i think he's under pressure from democrats both in the national party and the u.s. senate, even in the white house that maybe that's not the best option. they have to have somebody in there to run and be able to hold this seat and try to avoid a divisive primary. it's not a good situation. we've had this picture before with scott brown who does very well in special elections. he's the republican who stunned the world in 2010 and grabbed a seat. he lost it in the tough election this time a

, this is what the palace says. royal highnesses were looked after so well by everybody at king edward vii hospital. after they issued that, they added to that, there's been so much talk around the story. said at no point did the palace complain to the hospital about the incident. on the contrary, offered full support to the nurses involved and the hospital staff, wolf, at all times. >> max, where do things stand with the deejays in australia that placed the prank call. >> well, there's lots of smoking in australia after the event. the hospital took it extremely seriously, it was a breach of patient confidentiality. what we now know, the two presenters told by the chief executive of the radio station decided they're not going to carry on in that role for now out of respect for jacintha. i have to say, there's been fierce reaction about the statement. many feel it was a bit disrespectful in itself, it was not very clear that this terrible tragedy occurred and actually they were part of that. >> you know how old this nurse was? >> reporter: don't know how old she was. there's lots of specula

care. king edward viirupt where the nurse worked has released a statement saying it was extremely foolish of your presenters to even consider trying to lie their way through to one of our patients, let alone actually make the call. they went on to call the actions of the australian radio station appalling. let's get more reaction from senior international correspondent matthew chance. >> a lot of sadness and a lot of anger being directed against the radio station in sydney, australia. and the two deejays who carried out this prank call to this hospital here in central london. and a lot of their social media places like facebook have had to be taken down because of the messages of abuse from around the world that have been posted on them. also, the ceo of the company that owns the radio station has issued a public statement as well expressing his regret and saturdayness and indicating he does not think that legally there were any laws broken by the two deejays. they have been suspended, though, and the show has been taken off the air until further notice. take a listen to what that
